Year 9 students recently took part in an off-timetable day hosted by the ‘The Big Solutions Team’ called The Big ideas Day.
The day involved all the students working in teams and being creative; coming up with concepts for products or campaign to raise awareness and solve problems affecting our world and the impact that climate change is having on us. This is a national competition and students were encouraged to enter their ideas into the competition with the chance to going to London and the Palace of Westminster.
We were joined by Michaela from Tarmac and Tom from Middlemarch Biodiversity who supported our students with their ideas. Our students had lots of fun being creative and no idea was a bad idea. The ideas flowed and we had so many great concepts on making our world a better place to live. Initiatives included:
- Sea bed cleaner using a giant magnet to collect cans and metal from the sea floor
- A tank that can turn flood water into steam
- Cardboard cups that contain wildflower seeds
- A mobile app that allows you to buy carbon credits to off set your own carbon foot print.
Our goal was for SWA to get 4-teams to enter the national competition, but instead we were thrilled to have 10-teams that wanted to enter! We will now work with these employers to make their entries a reality.
SWA year 9’s were amazing and I am so proud of all of them. Next stop London!
